HOW TO HOST A SUMMER AL FRESCO DINNER PARTY

SETTING THE VIBE AND DECOR:

Picture this: a scene straight out of a desert dream, where string lights gently twinkle above, casting a warm glow on your outdoor dining area. Your guests are welcomed by the mesmerizing ambiance of these lights, which effortlessly turn your outdoor space into an inviting haven. The dining room is no longer confined to walls; it's an al fresco wonderland.

Think earthy tones, succulent centerpieces, and woven textures. Utilize cacti and desert blooms to add pops of color to the table settings. Arrange citronella candles around the perimeter to ward off any unwanted guests, while simultaneously adding a soft, flickering glow that adds to the magical atmosphere.

As the night deepens, transition from the dining table to a cozy, cushioned area ideal for stargazing. Lay back and immerse yourself in the vast expanse above. Here, amidst the silence and serenity of the desert, you'll have the opportunity to witness the grandeur of the Milky Way painting the sky with its cosmic brushstrokes.

AL FRESCO DINNER PARTY MENU:

A stellar al fresco dinner party menu celebrates the desert's summer bounty while delighting the senses with its diverse flavors.

ARRIVAL DRINK:

Watermelon Basil Granita - can be made as a mocktail or add your favorite vodka, tequila or mezcal for a refreshing cocktail.

APPETIZER:

Kick off the evening with a trio of delectable appetizers. Present a spread of mezze featuring hummus elevated by a sprinkle of smoked paprika, hydrating cucumbers, and juicy mediterranean olives.

SALAD:

Embrace the desert's vibrancy with a refreshing salad that bursts with color and taste. Dice up a watermelon and feta salad that marries sweet and salty flavors, mirroring the desert's unique allure. Add some fresh herbs such as mint or basil and some pistachios for that added touch. We added our pistachios in a little bowl for individual topping.

MAIN COURSE:

Opt for succulent filet mignon, perfectly grilled to your guests' preferred level of doneness. We love an easy tip which is to put the filets in the air fryer at 400 for 10 minutes for the perfect medium rare filet. Accompany the main dish with a side of smashed potatoes, boasting a touch of garlic and smoked paprika that adds depth to each velvety bite.

DESSERT:

Complete the celestial journey with a fig parfait, a harmonious blend of velvety greek yogurt, local honey and pistachios for a creamy dessert summer treat. Figs grow well in the desert, so we had fresh harvested figs from our tree. Tip: these make a great breakfast the next morning!

SETTING THE STAGE - TIPS FOR STAGING THE PARTY:

CHOOSING A SHADED LOCATION:

Position your dining table under a shaded tree or gazebo, ensuring that your guests are comfortable and shielded from direct sunlight.

PLAN FOR BUGS:

Place citronella candles in decorative lanterns or mason jars and scatter them around the seating area. You can also use food fans to keep flies off the food. I love to add them where the food is on platters for family style dining.

SETTING THE TABLE:

All about using natural beautiful serving dishes, wood boards and linen napkins. Mix and match just have fun! I added a special handmade snake candle holder from a local friend and artist Lulu - Claythedral.

MINDFUL LIGHTING:

Balance the captivating string lights with the natural luminosity of the stars. This interplay enhances the magical atmosphere you've crafted.  You can also wrap solar lights around tree trunks or along pathways for added charm.

PREPARE YOUR BACKYARD/GARDEN:

Add a pop of color with outdoor cushions or throw pillows on seating areas. Incorporate outdoor-friendly tableware and linens for a cohesive and inviting look.

DRINKS STATION:

Set up a stylish drinks station with infused water pitchers, a variety of beverages in ice-filled buckets, and a signature cocktail or mocktail for a personalized touch.

MUSIC MAGIC:

Curate a playlist that embodies the desert vibe. Celestial tunes add an extra layer of enchantment to the evening. If you aren’t into making your own playlist, you can browse CDS Spotify Playlists for easy entertaining. Yes my Taurus tendencies are to play my favorite music wherever I go!

FIRE PIT STORIES:

As the sun sets and the night sky emerges, gather around the fire pit for stories and laughter. This intimate moment fosters a deeper connection among friends and family. Add a s’mores munchies tray for a nostalgic touch.

KEEP IT SIMPLE:

Choose a menu that allows for easy preparation and serving. Grilled filet mignon with smoked paprika spiced smashed potatoes can be both elegant and straightforward. I buy my spices bulk on Thrive Market and refill my jars, here is a 40% off referral link.

STAY HYDRATED:

In the desert heat, hydration is essential. Offer infused water options, like cucumber-mint or lemon-lavender, to keep your guests refreshed.

STARGAZING AND BEYOND A CELESTIAL FINALE:

As the night deepens and the stars begin to twinkle, consider transitioning from the dining table to a cozy area for stargazing. Lay out blankets, cushions, and perhaps even a telescope for an intimate and awe-inspiring experience. And if you're in the high desert near Joshua Tree National Park, the summer months offer the best opportunity to witness the Milky Way's celestial dance across the desert sky.
